About

This project was for the ANDC NASA competition in 2017-2018. The design brief was to improve urban spaces through innovative architectural interventions. The objectives of this project include identifying a real, accessible, and safe public space in the city that can be transformed into an "Alternative space" for social purposes. The chosen site should be connected to the neighborhood and the larger community. The transformation process should consider the space's original condition and the reasons for its selection. Our team selected a dump yard in Podanur, Coimbatore, for this project. As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the focus is on creating points for food distribution and ensuring clean spaces for consumption. The challenges workers face in a local dump yard, where they are forced to eat and relax in unsanitary conditions, have been seen firsthand by us. Our project proposed cleaning specific areas within this massive 700-acre dump yard to provide a better environment for these hardworking individuals. We have also looked into the city's expansion, population growth, waste generation, and the available land for waste disposal. The project emphasizes the use of materials readily available locally, like bamboo, coconut leaves, wooden planks, and other wooden pieces, to provide a sustainable solution. Project key points: Coimbatore's expansion: The city's area increased from 105.6 km² to 257 km² by 2012, and its population increased from 9.31 lakhs in 2001 to 16.01 lakhs in 2011. Waste generation: The city produces 815 tons of waste per day (TPD), with a calorific value of 2381 kcal/kg. Waste disposal challenges: The current system involves littering streets with domestic and commercial waste and unscientific disposal at dumpsites. Our Solution: Our project proposes cleaning pockets within the 700-acre dumpsite to create better environments for the workers there, who currently have to eat and cook in unhygienic conditions.
